Abstract

Surfing is a sport practiced in coastal countries around the world, but the relationship of sport to the environment has been marked by the environmentally incorrect production of surfboards. The Greater Florianópolis area, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, is a center for the production of surfboards. Consequently it is the target of solid waste generated by this activity. There are no updated data on this production, or on the number of manufacturers that exist in the region and the volume of waste generated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental performance of the Surfboard Production Chain. The research is characterized as exploratory, of the case study type, with the application of the P+L and GAIA methodologies for evaluating environmental performance, in triangulation with legal indicators and the actors addressed. It is concluded that the surfboard industry in Florianópolis has poorer environmental performance than is expected by the legislation. The environmental assessment gave an undesirable result in terms of the companies' adaptation. The analysis of the results also indicated that 85% of the actors surveyed disposed of their waste inadequately, and that 50% could not be producing surfboards in accordance with the legal requirements.
