Abstract

The globalization that took place in the last few decades of the twentieth century has stimulated competition among companies. An alternative which is being adopted by small companies operating in this competitive market is the formation of networks. Like other sectors of the economy, pharmaceutical retail, in this case, small retailers in the pharmaceutical sector, are also following this trend. In Rio Grande do Sul, a network was formed with the aim of competing with the large retailers. The aim of this study is to identify the possible advantages for small retailers in the pharmaceutical sector, of joining a business network. The case study methodology was used, taking a qualitative approach. Four advantages were identified: (i) supply system, involving the sharing of purchasing and distribution activities; (ii) support activities linked to the management of human resources; (iii) a sharing of bureaucratic activities; (v) and own-label products.
