Abstract

This article analyzes aspects relating to the competitiveness of garlic growing in the region of Curitibanos-SC, focusing specifically on the financial return of the activity. It also discusses the concept of Local Productive Arrangements as a feasible strategy for sustaining the feasibility of this type of agribusiness. The basic hypothesis is that garlic growers have made agroindustrial investments in this region and garlic growing is presented as an alternative means of widening or diversifying these investments. For the financial feasibility analysis, the profitability indicators (VPL; VPLa; IBC and ROIA), and two risk indicators (TIR and PAY-BACK) were used. Despite evidence of high levels of profitability and the existence of barriers to entry, the business success of these small business depends on the formulation of competitive strategies, implemented via local productive arrangements.
