This paper analyses the gender pay determinants between top and lower level of Portuguese employees within firms. This study proposes a new approach to examine the pay gap determinants using separated multivariate ordered Tobit models for men and women (with the same set of explanatory variables) on linked employer-employee data set rather than Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition. The findings allow us to identify job segregation as one important source of the gender pay gap. However, with the increasing participation of men in household activities, women are freer for lobbying activities, providing for conditions to surpass the phenomenon of segregation.Downloads
