Abstract

The aim of this work is to offer a theoretical framework that highlights the main factors influencing the adoption and diffusion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Small and Medium Companies (SMEs). The methodology focuses on the analysis of the traditional theoretical models, adapted to the specific characteristics of SMEs. The environment in which the company operates, the characteristics of this class of technologies and the managerial characteristics are the main factors influencing the adoption and diffusion of ICT, therefore they must be analyzed together. For this reason, we propose an integrating model which enables a summary of the main contributions from previous studies on this subject, applied to the context of SMEs.
