Abstract

This work represents an attempt to overcome the dichotomy between nature and society in the study of tourism, using na interdisciplinary approach. It seeks to understand aspects of the tourism space of Balneário Camboriú-SC and the various elements which, when interconnected, can boost the competitiveness of the destination. With the aim of understanding this space, it analyzes Balneário Camboriú according to the proposed theories of Santos (1997a; 1997b), in other words, its elements (the people, companies, institutions, infrastructure and ecological environment) and its analytical categories (form, function, structure and process). It uses documentary research and secondary data, and at the same time, it seeks to relate the information investigated to notions of competitiveness, in order to offer a basis for subsequent studies and discussion on the competitiveness of the tourism destination. Key words: Socio-spatial organization, Tourism Space, Competitiveness of Tourism Destinations, Balneário Camboriú.
