Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the possible direct and indirect causes of the residents support to an increase in tourist arrivals to Punta del Este. The data correspond to a sample of 360 residents of the conurbation of Maldonado-Punta del Este. The analysis was performed using Partial Least Squares Regression. From the results obtained, it can be mentioned that: concern over the local economy has a positive effect on the valuation of the economic benefits; the perception of the economic benefits increases the perception of the other benefits; the perception of the other benefits improves the general attitude of the residents; and the general attitude of the residents has a positive effect on the support for the arrival of more tourists. It highlights the explanatory importance of the other benefits (improvement in the urban environment and public services).
