Abstract

The use of local productive arrangements is shown as a new way of organizing local production, which enables a greater generation of jobs and income, within a policy of sustainable local development. However, the tourism sector is only dealt with superficially in this analytical approach. In view of the aspects mentioned, and the importance of micro and small companies for regional development, this study seeks to analyze the process of organization of agents operating within the territory covered by the tourism production arrangement of Canoa Quebrada-CE. The research, which is exploratory-descriptive in nature and both qualitative and quantitative, was carried out during the year 2004, using case study methodology. It is concluded that the process by which the organizational configurations are formed, in the arrangement studied, is characterized by spontaneous initiatives of actors from within the local community itself. It was also clear that local community participation is essential for the formation of a local identity and the competitiveness of the tourism destination. Key words: Organization of tourism; Productive Arrangement; Canoa Quebrada.
